Application of Rate-Based Column simulation in Offshore Applications such as CO2 and SO2 removal

Rob Hockley, Aspentech, UK

Aspen Rate-based Distillation is a second generation rate-based model for simulation of absorption & stripping columns.

After a brief review of rate-based modelling, thermodynamic and kinetic models, and transport property models, the rate-based model predictions will be compared with pilot plant data sets for CO2 capture with aqueous MEA solution to show superior predictions of the rate-based model over traditional equilibrium-stage column models.

The rate-based column model is very helpful for design and rating of any offshore gas contactor columns and can potentially reduce technical uncertainty and associated overdesign of new or revamped process units.
