High acid gas content natural gas reservoirs are challenged by the energy required for their profitable exploitation. The existing, proven technologies for CO2 removal (e.g., amine scrubbing) are too energy intensive for the purification of high CO2 content natural gas and alternative technologies have been developed in the last twenty years. This raises the question of which technology is the most profitable for different amounts of CO2 to be removed. The objective of this paper is to provide useful guidelines for a preliminary screening of reliable technologies to determine which one involves the lowest energy and operating costs.
