Glycol Gas Dehydration – An Introduction

Presented at the GPA Europe Young Professional Training Day at IFP en in Rueil-Malmaison, France on 16 March 2017 by Jan Lambrichts and Eric Klinker, Dow

Water removal from produced natural gas is an essential processing step to prevent formation of natural gas hydrates and to mitigate corrosion in gas pipelines. Gas dehydration by glycols, particularly using triethylene glycol as the dehydration solvent, is a ubiquitous process for meeting these water removal requirements. A basic understanding of water content of natural gas, the process of dehydration by triethylene glycol, terminology used in the dehydration process, and the chemistry of glycol dehydration is essential for professionals in the gas treating industry.
