A fascinating aspect of the gas industry is that there is never anything totally new, while there are constant changes in the gas supply sources and the gas utilizations ,which deeply modify the perspectives of this industry .The synthetic gas industry and the natural gas one were born nearly at the same time (1813 and 1821) ,the first one dominating worldwide until world war two and the second one thereafter. A recent comeback of man-produced gas takes the form of biogas and of power to gas .However the fears of a natural gas “peak” in the early 2000’s has triggered an over-supply situation, with shale gas competing with deep offshore one ,and low prices opening new markets such as transport fuel ( CNG or LNG in trucks and ships ,and may-be tomorrow trains or airplanes ), and new supply systems such as FLNG and FSRU’s .
Long term views about natural gas must constantly refer to economics, ie costs, prices taxation and competitivity .These questions become now deeply influenced by concerns related to anthropogenic climate changes : will these concerns favour natural gas in the future or limit it’s future expansion ? We will try to give our views on all those questions which will shape the future of the gas industry.
