The Hot-Seat

A message from our Chairperson, Gary Bowerbank.

"Let me first wish everyone a Happy New Year and All the Best for 2022. I do hope you have been able to spend time with friends and family, and to take a break after another challenging year in 2021.

At GPA Europe, we have a busy year ahead of us, and we look forward to seeing many of you in person at one of the events.

This will be the time of year were you are setting your own goals for the year ahead, I am sure many of them will be linked to the Energy Transition and to support this we will be continuing our webinar series (free to members) on the key areas of Hydrogen, biogas and starting with CCUS in Feb. These events all us all to come together, learn about these growing sectors and to share our own views.

Let me close by inviting you to provide feedback to us on our program, either via this post or to [email protected]; and remember to follow us on social media."

Save the Date

We're excited to announce the date for the first of our webinars in 2022:

Thursday 17 February 2022
CCUS Webinar

In conjunction with our Future Energy CCUS Team, we are delighted to bring you an afternoon of high quality presentations from industry experts directly to you, for free.

Topics will cover operational experience from existing CO2 capture facilities, CCUS Technology developments and updates from European / worldwide CCUS hub’s.

Registration will be going live in the next couple of weeks, so stay tuned on our LinkedIn page for further announcements.

Call for Papers

Be part of our conferences promoting a new energy future and the transition of our industry towards that future. We are looking for stories about the development of technology and best practices affecting Natural Gas processing. As well as a look at Hydrogen, Biogas, Ammonia, Carbon Capture and Storage, and LNG amongst others, to inspire the gas processing community.

21 April 2022 Virtual Webinar - "Hydrogen"

In conjunction with our Future Energy Hydrogen Team, we are currently planning the programme and Call for Papers closes on Friday 21 January 2022. The topics we are looking for include:

• H2 subsurface storage
• O2 monetization from water electrolysis
• Dehydration of product streams from BH2 & GH2
• Catalytic contaminant removal from BH2 & GH2

May 2022 Conference & Workshop – “Roadmap for the Transition”

September 2022 Virtual Webinar – “Biogas”

November 2022 Annual Conference, Young Professional Training Day & AGM

Do you have a story to tell? All we need is a 100-200-word abstract. Send your abstract - Title, Author to [email protected]

For more information see our Call for Papers and Submission Guidelines.

In Brief

Check out our latest issue of In Brief! This issue reports on the GPA Europe Virtual Conference held in May 2021.

We have our regular 'View from the Top' by our Chairperson Gary Bowerbank, discussing 'Gas processing industry makes the big headlines!'.

The lead article has been contributed by our very own Gary Bowerbank, Adrian Finn, Gauthier Perdu and Myrian Schenk. The article is titled 'European gas in a more import-dependent future' and has also been published in the World Petroleum Congress program.

If you would like to contribute to future issues, we have an opportunity to get involved. A chance to promote your name through the industry. Please contact the GPA E Team for more information - [email protected]

Paper of the Month

This month we are looking back to one of our CCUS papers from Brad Healey, Oil & Gas Corrosion. Presented at our Virtual Conference May 2021.

"An Integrated Approach for Europe’s Industrial CCUS Projects"

"CO2 has been transported via pipelines for 50 years. The oil and gas industry has a wealth of experience in this area, gained as a need to dispose of acid gas, or as part of EOR. CO2 associated with hydrocarbon production has an exceptional level of purity. The engineering of industrial carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects requires a different approach. CCUS for CO2 of industrial origin has limited industry standards and documents of reference, and a large number of unknowns. Naturally, industrial CCUS presents a greater challenge than pure CO2 capture due to the level of impurities found in the systems. The impurities present have an effect on the fluid behaviour, and increases the demands for thermodynamic modelling to take into account cross associating components to accurately predict phase behaviour. Without accurate modelling, it is not possible to quantify the risks of corrosion. Due to their complexity, these projects require a multidiscipline, integrated, and cyclical approach with input from corrosion, flow assurance, and thermodynamic specialists in order to ensure successful and effective project completion. This presentation presents our multidisciplinary approach and the various challenges faced on the most advanced projects for industrial CCUS."
