Mercaptans Removal with Molecular Sieves - Options and Reality

Presented at GasTech Centre of Technical Excellence 23 March 2011

Mercaptans removal with molecular sieves used to be a bit of a headache a dozen of years ago and is now more a standard technology. Despite the fact that this application can be found in a quite significant number of units, particularly LNG plants, there are still some differences in the gas plants and their molecular sieve unit arrangement.

After an overview of the existing plants the below paper discusses the different possibilities of removing mercaptans and other sulfur species with adsorbents and how to cope with different operating aspects, such the regeneration gas treatment, BTX co-adsorption, mercaptans removal in gas or liquid phase.
