Challenges of Qatar Mega LNG Projects

Presented at GPA Europe Annual Conference, Prague, 21 - 23 September 2011

Mohammed Ould Bamba, Nathalie Millot & Herve Mahe, Technip

The successful start-up of the six Qatar mega LNG trains represents a major milestone for the LNG industry, with new economies of scale and new technologies bringing performance, efficiency, reliability and reduced plant emissions. These are the world’s largest LNG trains (7.8 Mtpa each) using Air Products new AP-XTM process, state-of-the-art turbines, compressors and heat exchangers. Each of these LNG trains includes the world’s largest gas pre-treatment plant and single shaft refrigeration compressor string. There are also huge inlet gas facilities, utility systems and flare. The six trains are served by the world’s largest LNG terminal.

These projects have allowed Qatar to become the world’s largest LNG producer with some 77 Mtpa. Successful implementation of these projects meant overcoming many challenges simultaneously. This paper will focus on the key challenges: new technologies, worldwide work locations, construction and logistics, safety, camps and social issues, start-up and plant performance.
