Using Quantified Risk Assessment (QRA) in Feasibility Design

Presented at AGM & Technical Meeting, 23 November 2017 at Hilton London Paddington HOtel, London by Adrian Jones, Costain
QRA is a powerful tool that informs operators, designers and regulators about risks associated with high hazard facilities but its complexity and cost means QRA is not normally used in Feasibility or Concept Design. However, using a ‘Coarse / Lite’ QRA approach in early design phases can have many benefits, particularly relating to major process safety event prevention, by using a quantifiable basis to assess different design options, locations and technologies. Costain were able to demonstrate just how useful Coarse QRA can be in early design, when they recently delivered a challenging capital project for National Grid Gas Transmission.
