Process heat accounts for nearly half of industrial energy use and is a critical input to operation of the energy system. One challenge for process heat is achieving efficient temperature control where loads change frequently. For indirect heating processes, energy losses due to overheating can represent more than 30% of total energy consumption.
This paper will present results of a study carried out to assess energy performance of indirect heaters on gas pipeline Pressure Reduction Stations with a focus on quantifying over-delivery of heat beyond process requirements. Operating data collected from five indirect heater installations is presented, including two water bath heaters, two boiler houses and one Thermosyphon heater.
Results highlight improved temperature control and load response from the use of latent heat in the Thermosyphon heater leading to a reduction in overheating losses of up to 88%.
