Blowdown: how a safety system impacts plant design?

Blowdown system is a key safety barrier in oil & gas facilities. Its design requires specific studies including especially dynamic modeling. Requirements around these studies have increased since years, e.g. codes such as API 521 have evolved from a prescriptive approach to a performance-based design. These complex studies contribute to a safe design. However, in addition to the first safety purpose of blowdown system, it has also significant impacts on plant designs: obviously on flare systems but also on process systems. This paper will present how blowdown system design impacts the overall oil & gas process facility design, to which extent and also the main links between process and safety studies.
