Thank you from GPAE

A big thank you to all delegates and speakers who attended our Technical Meeting & AGM 2025. We had six high-quality technical presentations — covering topics such as CO₂ capture from aluminium smelter exhausts, greenfield LNG plant operation, hydrogen & ammonia production, gas-treating technology improvements, and blue hydrogen production. Our AGM followed, with Samantha Nicholson presenting an overview of 2025.

A special Thank you was given to Lelsey for looking after us so well during her time with us. Helen jumped back in at the deep end, taking up the reins and being back in the saddle for the AGM.

Now that we have brought down the curtain on the GPAE Technical Meeting and AGM, we are already looking ahead to next year.  We will be hosting more Virtual Technical Webinars (** free to all - you can forward the invites to interested parties and/or potential members **) on the future energy areas, as well as our Annual Conference which will be held in Bergen, Norway.

By working together, learning from each other and investing in the right areas we can meet the energy demands of the future without compromising the present.


Stay involved with us in 2026: membership renewals for 2026 were sent out on the 2nd December and we look forward to seeing you at our events this coming year.

Be part of our conferences promoting a new energy future and the transition of our industry towards that future. 

We are looking for stories about the development of technology and best practices affecting Natural Gas processing. As well as a look at Hydrogen, Biogas, Ammonia, Carbon Capture and Storage, and LNG amongst others, to inspire the gas processing community.

Paper of the Month

This month we are looking back to a paper from Mike Sheilan, Amine Experts Inc. One of our Best Paper Award Winners, presented during our Annual Conference 2025.

"Iron Sulphide - Friend or Foe Revisited"

Twenty years ago, Amine Experts published a seminal paper on H2S corrosion in amine systems, titled “Iron Sulphide – Friend or Foe”. The paper described the various forms of iron sulphide formed from the reaction between H2S and steel and how knowledge of these corrosive by products can provide a clue as to the formation mechanism, the severity of the potential corrosive environment and the degree to which the corrosion will affect operation of an amine unit.

Amine plants treating gas containing H2S will have iron sulphides in the system. Are iron sulphides a good or bad thing? When do they help and when do they hinder? They are known for many things: forming protective films but yet promote fouling and are pyrophoric. The original paper attempted to clarify the pros and cons of iron sulphides present in an amine system. This paper will build on another 20 years of experience and knowledge gained through troubleshooting 100’s of amine units around the globe, specifically targeting guidelines on operating low pressure units like Acid Gas Enrichment (AGE) and Tail Gas Treating Units (TGTU), both becoming more prevalent in Middle East gas production.
