In-House Redesigning of Outdated Equipment for Sustainable Efficiency and Cost Savings

Upgrading outdated systems with newer versions may appear straightforward, but it is not always the most cost-effective or environmentally responsible solution. At the Northern Field of Kuwait Oil Company (KOC), a legacy natural draft incinerator was successfully converted into a forced draft system through in-house innovation. By repurposing a nearby air blower and designing a custom air intake damper, the team achieved a 66% improvement in fuel-gas efficiency, maintaining equivalent combustion temperatures with just one-third of the original gas consumption. Driven primarily by environmental goals, the project led to a projected annual reduction of 50,000 MMBtu in fuel use and 2,653 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. Financially, it is forecasted to result in savings of approximately USD 200,000 annually, with a project cost of only USD 10,000—far lower than the USD 300,000 vendor alternative. This retrofit highlights the value of repurposing existing infrastructure to improve performance and reduce environmental impact - delivering sustainable gains without major capital investment.
