Application of Generic MEA for CO2 Capture of Direct Exhaust Emission from Aluminium Smelting
Aluminium smelting is a large consumer of supplied power, but when the power is sourced from a non-carbon dioxide emitting source/s, the process exhaust gases become the most significant CO2 emission.
This paper explains the status of Carbon Replacement technologies and their likely future application in reducing process exhaust CO2 emissions and how the low 1%v CO2 content found in the exhaust gas is a challenge to competing Carbon Capture technologies. These are listed and assessed for likelihood of feasibility. Amines are assessed as suitable for carbon capture to 90% capture rate at these low %CO2 levels.
Bechtel’s Carbon Capture template using 35%wt generic MEA is shown as a good open-source basis for developing a carbon capture plant for aluminum smelting exhaust gas. The risks are explained, including performance at low CO2 partial pressure, solvent degradation and the impact of impurities and recommends pilot plant testing as the next step.
