The Hot-Seat

A message from our Chairperson, Gary Bowerbank.

"I have reflected several times in the last couple of years that the pace of change just keeps getting faster, but there seems to be no end in sight to the acceleration of the Energy Transition. Recent events have propelled it beyond just an environmental driven case for change, to now being about security of supply. And while the events on the Eastern border of Europe are tragic, we all hope for a peaceful resolution as quickly as possible, it has forced governments to take another look at their energy portfolio. We will need a range of solutions and to work together across the sectors.

At GPA Europe we will continue to create the platform for our members to come together, discuss the challenges industry and society face, while connecting non-members via our webcasts (such as the H2 Webinar in the next few weeks) and our conferences (gpaeurope.com/events).

As always, we welcome any feedback and would particularly like to hear from our more junior members, what they want/need from GPA Europe over the coming years.”

In Brief

Check out our latest issue of In Brief! This issue reports on the GPA Europe Virtual Conference held in May 2021.

We have our regular 'View from the Top' by our Chairperson Gary Bowerbank, discussing 'Gas processing industry makes the big headlines!'.

The lead article has been contributed by our very own Gary Bowerbank, Adrian Finn, Gauthier Perdu and Myrian Schenk. The article is titled 'European gas in a more import-dependent future' and has also been published in the World Petroleum Congress program.

If you would like to contribute to our November 2022 issue, we have an opportunity to get involved. A chance to promote your name through the industry. Please contact the GPA E Team for more information - [email protected]

Paper of the Month

This month we are looking back to one of our Hydrogen papers from Roland van Uffelen, Technip Energies. Presented at our Virtual Conference May 2021.

"Technologies to Decarbonize Hydrogen Production"

"The challenges of the energy transition require addressing long-term solutions for reduction of carbon emissions to the atmosphere by addressing the needs for generation, storage and utilization of future energy sources.

Blue hydrogen is expected to pave the way for the future low-carbon energy solutions. Cost-effective, deeply decarbonized blue hydrogen production is available and proven today at the desired scale for both new plants and retrofits, and provides immediate solutions for carbon capture, handling and utilization. In projects converting grey to blue hydrogen plants, flue gas capture may be an attractive option for deep carbon capture and is expected to be more cost effective compared to traditional CCS applications where CO2 content in the flue gas is lower.

The paper will address the carbon intensity of various hydrogen production methods, from traditional grey hydrogen through blue hydrogen, at various capture rates, as well as the production of hydrogen in electrolysers."
