GPA Europe December 2020 Newsletter

As 2020 comes to a close, a look back at our Virtual Event Series & AGM and snippets of what 2021 has to offer.

A special thank you from all of us at GPA Europe to Martin Copp and his past two years as chairperson of GPA Europe. As Martin hands over the baton, we say a warm welcome to Gary Bowerbank as our next Chairperson and Myrian Schenk as Vice Chairperson.

Stay involved with us in 2021, membership renewals for 2021 have been sent out and we look forward to welcoming you at one of our Virtual Events this year.

The Hot-Seat

A message from our new Chairperson, Gary Bowerbank.

"19 November marks my first day in the hot-seat as Chairperson of GPA Europe; I would like to thanks Martin Copp for the enthusiasm and stewardship in the last two years. He has kicked of the Key Strategic Initiatives to ensure GPA Europe Vision of "Shaping the future of sustainable energy by facilitating innovation, knowledge sharing and collaboration" is realised. Together I am sure we will get there.

Going forward I hope to keep in touch with small updates, and do feel free to reach out to me or [email protected], with any feedback on what you want to see from GPA Europe."

Virtual Event Series 2020 - 2021

The digital journey continues 10 December 2020!

Be part of our digital journey continuing on 10 December 2020 with the next Technical Session. We are delivering high quality presentations directly to you, our members, for free in the comfort of your home or office. We are delighted to announce that we will be offering 4 additional Virtual Sessions in 2021, we will confirm dates in the New Year.

Our next session

Meet our Speakers 10 December

Our previous session

Meet our Speakers 19 November

Thank you from all of us at GPA Europe to Celine Belbol and Mounir Mossolly PhD CEng from TechnipFMC, as well as Nejat Rahmanian for presenting at our Virtual Technical Session & AGM. A great look into Turbomachinery Configuration for LNG Projects from Celine Belbol and Mounir Mossolly; and an industrial and experimental case studies on hydrate prediction and inhibition from Dr Nejat Rahmanian.

Following the Annual General Meeting, our new Chairperson, Gary Bowerbank presented the work that has been carried out to date, looking at the future of GPA Europe. During this presentation, the Future Energy KSI group requested Energy Champions who will be assigned to a small team focussed on each ‘new’ gas vector identified: CCS, Hydrogen, Biogas, Ammonia – we are open to other suggestions from our members. If you would be interested in being an Energy Champion, please get in touch with us at [email protected] or +44 (0)1252 625 542. We will be forming these groups at the beginning of next year, once all interest has been received.

We will be continuing the work stated by our Key Strategic Initiatives groups if you are interested in being part of a group, or would like more information, please let us know at [email protected] or +44 (0)1252 625 542.

Did you miss the sessions? All our sessions from the Virtual Event Series are available for GPA Europe members to watch for free on our website here.

Paper of the Month

A new feature for us, we will be highlighting a paper of relevance from our archives each month.

This month we are looking back to a paper from Adrienne Blume, Hydrocarbon Processing and Editor, Gas Processing & LNG, Gulf Energy Information; and Malcolm Harrison, Harisiti Ltd:

"The Insoluble Equation: How to Balance Europe’s Natural Gas Supply and Demand"

In the paper Adrienne and Malcolm give a comprehensive overview of the current and future energy balance for Europe clearly showing that, even as renewables increase, the need for gas remains strong.

"The balance of supply and demand of natural gas in Europe is approaching a perfect storm, blown by geological, geopolitical and regulatory forces.

Although North Sea production is still very active, supply continues to decline, and production of the giant Groningen field continues to be reduced following earthquakes induced by the depleted reservoir.

On the other side of the equation, Europe's gas demand continues to increase in line with GDP growth. Also, many governments have agreed to phase out coal for power generation; gas is the obvious alternative. Countering this is the unachievable goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 20% of 1990 levels per decade and energy-efficiency initiatives in the industrial sector.

The equation has many unknowns, but there are options for filling the gap. Few technical barriers exist but many geopolitical considerations are on the table, informing views on the security of supply.

Additional gas imports are available via the northern corridor (Russia), the southern corridor (the Caspian) or, with new discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean, from the Middle East and Africa. LNG is available from the usual sources, but with two new and competing players: the ever-growing capacity of Russia's Artic LNG projects, which are cheaply and reliably available now; or from new liquefaction projects yet to start up in the US.

In this paper, we will discuss the choices available to the governments of Europe, along with their relative merits and potential consequences, and paint a picture of just one of several futures for European gas."
