Why you Need a Carbon Capture Pilot Plant for your Flue Gas

Abstract: This paper presents the reasons for carbon capture pilot plants, to provide greater confidence in the design, emissions, and operation of a full-sized carbon capture plant.
Carbon capture is proposed as the approach for achieving Net Zero targets for several flue gas-emitting industries such as gas/coal/biomass power, waste-to-energy plants, and refineries. However, there is limited data available to indicate if the process design can meet the performance requirements for government funding, and what the gaseous and liquid emissions will be.
One of the big questions the pilot plant would aim to answer is post carbon capture flue gas emissions, which is particularly important for determining Nitrosamine emissions in proposed clusters.
The Bechtel 7tph pilot plant is designed for flexible operations, with variable water wash and acid wash combinations demonstrating the impact on emissions, variable packing heights facilitating the testing of capture efficiency at different bed heights and a reclaimer skid connection to improve understanding of reclaiming requirements and amine degradation.
The pilot plant design is stand-alone, with integrated air cooling and on-skid utilities, so that proprietary solvents can be tested and modular designs can enable transportation within the UK road transportation envelope.
